Mt. Fuji can be seen from various places in Kofu City, but there are two representative spots. One is from the mountain road heading towards Shosenkyo. However, since this place is on a public road, you can't take your time to see it unless you have a rental car or your own car. The other view is from Maizuru Castle Park in front of Kofu Sta.. Although the castle was built in the 16th century, there is no castle tower left and it is now maintained as a park. The view of Mt. Fuji seen through the restored castle walls and turret is truly a sight that can only be found here. You can enjoy the scenery slowly.

Stroll through Shosenkyo, one of Japan's most scenic spots

Shosenkyo is a scenic spot that has been selected as one of Japan's 25 scenic spots. The looming interweaving of mountains, rocks, and rivers is truly a piece of natural art. It is especially popular for its beautiful fresh greenery and autumn leaves, and for its spectacular scenery. The main course, which has a promenade, is approximately 2km long, and as you wind your way along the river, you will encounter many impressive landscapes, such as steep cliffs and mysterious waterfalls.

The best time to see the autumn leaves is from late October to mid-November. If you want to enjoy an even better view, take the ropeway near the end of the promenade to the top of the mountain.

Enjoy valley watching while riding a horse-drawn carriage

A tourist horse-drawn carriage, Toteuma, connects the starting and ending points of the promenade. The scenery that you can encounter is special because you are riding a leisurely horse-drawn carriage.

The old man driving the coach will explain the highlights in a friendly manner in Koshu dialect. The fare is 1,500 yen one way. Capacity is 15 people, departing with 6 or more people. Please note that it is closed from December to February due to snow and cold.

Encounter the beautiful scenery of a bridge spanning a valley

There are many photo spots in Shosenkyo, but one of the most recommended is Nagatan Bridge at the entrance of Shosenkyo. This arch bridge was built in the Taisho period and is the symbol of Shosenkyo. Especially during the fall foliage season, the valley with its different elevations and colorful trees create an impressive panorama.

The birthplace of the Koshu specialty “Tori Motsuni”

"Tori motsuni" is a popular local dish in Kofu. This dish is made by putting fresh chicken liver, heart, gizzard, and gyokudou in a pot and boiling it down with soy sauce and sugar. It won the Gold Grand Prix at the 5th B-1 Grand Prix Atsugi Tournament held in 2010 and became a local dish known throughout the country. Its exquisite sweet and salty taste goes perfectly with rice and alcohol. It was born around 1950 at Okufuji Honten, and since then it has spread mainly to local soba restaurants.

You definitely want to try the specialties of your travel destination. If you are in the Kofu area, Hoto is especially recommended. This dish is made with noodles that are thicker and chewier than udon and simmered in miso, and is packed with local vegetables. Yamanashi Prefecture is well known as a major fruit producing area. You can enjoy fruit picking during most of the year. In particular, peaches (late June to August), grapes (July to late October), and strawberries (January to May) are special products, so you can easily experience them as they are everywhere.
